The Soča Valley is located in the north western corner of Slovenia and is named after the 140 km long river that has its source high in the Julian Alps. The source starts at an altitude of approximately 1,100 metres and descends rapidly down its route through the Trenta Valley in Slovenia, on into Italy and out to the Adriatic Sea.  The river passes under the peak of the highest mountain in Slovenia, Mount Triglav (Three-headed mountain), and passes through several towns and villages such as Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin, Most na Soči and Nova Gorica, all known as the Soča Valley.  However, only the upper section as far as Most na Soči is used for our activity holidays, as this is where the river flows the fastest as it rushes down the mountains towards the sea.
Because of its emerald green coloured water, the Soča river is known as "The Emerald River". It is said to be one of the very few rivers in the world that retain such a colour throughout their length
The Soča river is also well known amongst fly fishermen, for its unique trout species (known as the marble trout), which lives in the upper section of the river. This species is now endangered due to other non-indigenous trout species introduced to the Soča river sometime between the two World Wars. Fly fishing on the river and on its tributaries is now highly regulated and, although they still allow the sport, the licences can be very expensive. There is a limit as to how many you may remove from the river in one day. Catch and release licences are cheaper. Fishermen tend to favour the tributaries as the Soča river is now used by vessels such as rafts, kayaks and canoes.
Due to the shear awe inspiring beauty of the place and the abundance of unspoilt nature, even those not taking part in the sporting activities the area has to offer, will not be short of things to see and admire.  This small corner of Europe is pure, clean, unpolluted and a piece of paradise on earth.
